The First Video I Ever Saw on Couponing

I finally found this video.  I had said during the coupon class that I saw a youtube video on couponing and I was instantly hooked.  GO HERE to see the video.  This is an old news story on Miss Coupon Diva who was featured on the very first Extreme Couponing Show.  This is a news story on the Today show and aired well before the TLC show.  I hope you enjoy it like I did and get inspired.

How to Shop at CVS - Video

GO HERE to view one of Collin's how-to-videos on shopping at CVS. This is a great video to watch if you are new to couponing and want to see someone in action during their shopping trip.  I'm going to try and put up more videos up on basic couponing for all the people at the coupon class that need help getting started.  Plus I love watching videos on couponing!

OT - Build Your Own Furniture

This doesn't really have anything to do with coupons but it does fit into the frugal category.  I have fallen in love with this website created by a mom with tons of plans on how to build your own furniture.  I have built shelves before but she has plans on benches, headboards, chairs, tables and even playhouses.  It's all very basic instructions and had lots of pictures to go along with the instructions.  I'm so going to build a storage bench this summer.  Check it OUT HERE!

Cheap Bandages

Check out the following deal to get cheap bandages at Walmart or Walgreens (this month only they are marked at $.99 at Walgreens)

$.09 Hot Wheels cars at Target

Target listed up some new coupons and one of them is $1 off any Hot Wheels item.  I'm pretty sure they have the single cars at $1.09 which means $.09 after the coupon.  And the expiration date is 8/31 so there is plenty of time to get these.  Remember 2 prints per computer and these would make for great birthday and Christmas gifts.

How to make your own laundry detergent

I always had to buy scent free and dye free detergent for my older son because he is very chemically sensitive. I usually bought All Free and Clear. Then one day I saw an episode of 18 Kids and Counting about the Duggar family and they were making their own laundry detergent to save money. The idea popped in my head that I could make my own laundry detergent as well and make it all natural. So I experimented with a few recipes and finally found one that worked well for me. I use to spend $12 for a large 96 oz. container of All. I know spend about $.04 for each load of laundry. It may seem like it’s hard to do but it’s actually very easy and I love the lingering smell it leaves in my kitchen. I have a youtube video with step-by-step directions HERE if you want to watch that.
Here is the recipe:
1 Quart water (boiling)
2 cups bar of soap (grated)
2 cups Borax
2 cups washing soda

Equipment needed: A large pan, a long handled spoon, potato peeler, 1 cup measuring cup, large container to stir in and a funnel. I bought all my tools at a thrift shop since it was not going to be used with food.

1. add finely grated bar soap to the boiling water and stir until the soap is melted. You can keep on low heat until soap is melted.

2. pour the soap water into a large, clean pail and add the Borax and washing soda. Stir well until all is dissolved.

3. add 8 quarts of water, stir until well mixed

4. pour the soap into empty laundry containers and put the lids on.

Tips: Shake the container before you measure it out to break up any clumps. I use Kirk’s Castile bar soap because it is dye and perfume free but you can use any bar soap. You can also add perfume to it to scent it as well.

Fresh Market

I finally got to see the new Fresh Market on Burkhardt.  It was packed but beautiful.  Very nice store with great quality products and high prices to go with them.  This store does not carry all organic like Whole Foods does but I kinda like that you can buy Coke, chips, candy, Sunny D and such there.  There are plenty of gluten and casein free foods there.  The produce section is nice and I was surprised that it wasn't all local.  I guess I got the impression it would be.  But most of it was from the US. I'm really spoiled because I lived in Indianapolis for over 3 years and always shopped at Whole Foods and Trader Joes.  I still like those stores better because they have store coupons, accept manufacturer coupons and have good sales.  I'm so thankful this store has gotten so much business and response from the community. The flower dept is amazing and the deli section is my favorite part of the store. What do you guys think of the new store?

Free Spices at Schnucks

I got in my car this afternoon to drive to Evansville, checked my mailbox and as I was at the stop sign to turn onto the highway I saw that the Weber Grill Spices were on sale for $1.  YEAH!  I've been waiting for this. I had to drive back home and get my coupons.  If you read my post from a few days ago I predicted that this product would go on sale and I had ordered coupons to go with it.  So finally it did and I got lucky.  I bought a ton of spices at the S. Green River Schnucks and the larger container of the seasoning salt is included in the $1 sale also.  The $1 off coupons to make these spices free are located in the 5/22 and 6/26 SS.
The only other great deal I see if the Baby Ray's Bar-B-Q sauce for $.75 and there is a $1 coupon but it did not come in our papers and it seems the coupon clipping websites are sold out of it.  Ebay had some but at too high a price for me.

Sorry - no pictures - I didn't have my camera with  me at the store, only my iPhone and I cant figure out how to load a picture to this blog.  And now I can't find my camera at all.

My Menards Trip

I paid $0 for all this.  I love Menards!  I had about $50 in Menards rebates and all of these were free after rebate (see my previous post).  The hacksaws were from the lasts weeks paper I believe but the rebate was still active.  The Softsoap for $.39 after rebate but I had more than enough on my rebate card to cover it.

I did run into a nice older man while I was getting my rebate cards at the customer service desk who was buying tools for Habitat for Humanity.  He said several members of his church do the rebate program just to provide that charity with tools and they have a collection box at the church.  I just thought that was wonderful.

My Walgreens trip today

It seems like a slow week for me for the drug store deals but I had $9 in RR for Walgreens that I had to spend today so below are the deals I got.
This shopping trip total was $1.18.  I had $9 in RR which I used towards this and got $2 back in RR.

The Glow Color Explosion were $4.99 each (reg. $8.99) and I had ordered some $2 off coupons a couple months back that expire 6/30.  So that made them $2.99 each and will be Christmas gifts.  There were 4 left on the shelves and I put a $2 coupons on each one so if you'd like these also they are at the St. Joe Walgreens.

The Pringles are 4/$6 with a $2 RR and I used one $1/2 Pringles coupon from the P & G home mailer coupon book and one $1/3 coupon from today's paper. They had plenty on the shelves and a endcap.

Scan Tunnels comming to Kroger stores

Mr. Coupons posted this picture on his wall at weusecoupons.com and it's suppose to be coming to Kroger stores.  Interesting! It's called a scan tunnel and looks like a self service register.

How to Stockpile Groceries in our area

At the coupon class someone had asked me how to stockpile on grocery items when we don't have the great stores who double coupons all the time and I didn't have a real good answer and it's been bothering me.  I've been chatting with other bloggers who live in areas like ours and now I feel I can better answer that.

Mostly everyone feels that we don't have the opportunity to do those "Extreme Couponing" shopping trips but we can do "realistic shopping" which is reducing our grocery bill by as high of a percentage as we can.  This may be using coupons which reduce our bill by 10% to 50% or more.  That is more what we need to focus on is using our coupons to insure we don't have to pay full price.  The TLC show makes us feel like were not doing our job as couponers by not getting a giant grocery purchase for $.14 but it's not realistic for where we live.

What I have started doing is really stockpiling on items I can get free.  I have been buying coupons online or trading to get as many as I can on those items I know I will get free.  For example, I knew with July 4th coming that all things grilling are going on sale.  So I took a gamble and ordered coupons for bar-b-q sauce, spices, etc and then have been waiting for them to go on sale.  I did get lucky with the $.99 KC Masterpiece Bar-B-Q sauce at Target and I had a lot of $1 coupons for that.  I also have a lot of $1 off Weber Grill spices which I have yet to see go one sale.  I also got about 10 packages of Oscar Mayer hot dogs for $5 which will last us all summer and more.  Each season there will be great sales and coupons so we can stockpile those items.  At Thanksgiving there will be lots of baking ingredients to go on sale, Christmas has tons of candy, Easter had lots of cake mixes, food dyes and such.

Below is a list of the stores commonly seen on Extreme couponing that run awesome deals.  Just an idea, if you are traveling this summer and will be in a city with one of these stores, see if you can make a coupon run.  I'm planning to go to Publix in Nashville myself this summer.  I'm also planning to go to Kroger in Owensboro.  I don't have high expectations for that store because they only double to $.50 and they do have some high prices but they have store coupons.  I'll let you guys know what happens.  If you have shopped there before, please leave a comment here to let us know how you did.

Albertsons
Publix
Kroger
Shop-Rite

My first response in writing to a company

This was not what I was wanting but I thought I'd share the first response I've gotten from writing to companies and hoping to get coupons in exchange.  It makes me think that it's better to snail mail so that in order for them to respond they will have to mail me.  Sending an email to them makes it so easy for them to just send another email back saying "thanks."  I wrote to Quaker to tell them my sons love their chewy bars and this was their response:

Mary:

We're so glad that Quaker Chewy Peanut Butter & Chocolate Chip Granola Bars are such a big hit with your boys.

Everyone here at Quaker works very hard to bring your family wholesome, yet tasty, snacks and we're happy you feel we've been successful. I'll share your kind feedback with the product development team.

With summer (and freedom from school) upon us, perhaps your children might enjoy making her very own granola bars as a "rainy day" project. Here is just one recipe idea:

We appreciate your business, Mary, and thank you for being a fan of Quaker.

Writing companies to get coupons

I've mentioned a few times about how you can write to companies to get coupons mailed to you.  Kristen over at Couponing to Disney gave me this idea and she has a great post up now about it.  GO HERE to read her sample letters and get pointers on writing your letters.  I also decided to email my letters and see how that goes. I was going to start with companies from A to Z but I've decided to start with the products we use most and love the most first and then branch out.  I'll share with you what I get in the mailbox if it works.

Why I'm not driving to Henderson right now to go to Kmart

This is my rant post, just to warn you.  I posted earlier that it is double coupon week at Kmart and that I wasn't probably going to go myself.  I've been watching the blog posts from others who have tried to get great deals and listened about how they left the store with nothing.  That's why I'm not wasting my gas money.  First, I hate Kmart more than Walmart.  I think that started when I was a kid and my mom would make me go to Kmart with her and I would wear a baseball hat and look down the whole time because I would die if one of my friends saw me there.  The blue light would come on my mom would abandon me as she raced off to see what the deal was and I was dying of embarrassment.  Kmart's across the country are all the same to me, high prices on most everything and cheap quality clothes, bedding, decor and furnishings.  I'm being completely snobby right now, I am aware of it, but I still dislike Kmart.   So when they run a sale where they will double coupons, it really doesn't mean anything to me because my doubled coupon and their high price will probably still not beat Walmart's everyday price.  Not to mention the gas I wasted to drive to Henderson.  I do like Henderson though, great parks and a nice clean indoor play area at McDonalds! They also have a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store there that I love.  I think I just got spoiled in Indianapolis with all their nice quality grocery stores like Marsh, Meijer, Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Oh how I miss you!!!

Couponing Club

Several people at the couponing class mentioned that we should have a couponing club or just some couponers who get together to swap coupons and brag about our shopping trips.  Or we can vent about troublesome cashiers!  What do you guys think?  My friend Lori thought Starbucks might be a good place but what times and days are good for all of you?  Leave a comment on this post and we can see if there is enough interest.

Free Deodorant at Target with this coupon

What is Swagbucks?

I love Swagbucks because I get a free $5 Amazon e-gift card from them about every 3 months just from using it as my search engine.  I installed their toolbar which helps alot and I just make sure to search for something every day to get anywhere from 1 to 10 swagbucks.  Then on Fridays you get double swagbucks.  You can also do a daily poll to get 1 swagbuck and they often leave you clues to solve a puzzle and you can win a lot of swagbucks that way.  It's fun and easy.  To find out more and sign up GO HERE.

My Walgreens trip today

I went to the Walgreens on St. Joe today.  The cashier knows me there and was asking where my little one is (the troublemaker).  THANK YOU to my niece for watching both boys for me today so I could coupon shop in peace.  I did not get too much there because I have a pretty big stockpile on somethings and Walgreens didn't have a lot of great deals this week.  But check out what I got below:
This shopping trip was $.08 and I did use $6 in RR from last week.

The shirts were $1 and children's sizes.  My nieces are going to spend a weekend with me this summer and were going to make our own t-shirt designs so this helps make it a cheap craft.  The pumpkin seeds were on clearance for $.24 each.  The Cottonelle tub was about $.21.  I had a free coupon for that which was mailed to me but the value was $2.89 and Walgreens had their tubs at $3.  Here's the deal for the razor:

Use the $4/1 coupon found in the 6/5 PG
Pay $5.89
Get back a $5 RR

Double Coupon Week at Kmart

I'm not a fan of Kmart or their Double Coupon weeks because they limit you to using only 5 coupons and you have to have a card which tracks you so you can not make multiple trips.  But starting tomorrow, for one week only, there is no limit to the coupons that you can double. You do need a Shop Your Way rewards card which you can get HERE or sign up for it at the checkout. I checked the list of participating stores and our Henderson Kmart is going to be participating.  The double coupon week will double any coupon up to $.99.  So they will not double a $1 coupons (making it $2) but they will double a $.75 coupon (making it $1.50).  I don't know if I'm going to be able to make a trip over there this week but if any of you do please leave a comment on this post to let us know how your shopping trip was! Collin over at Hip2Save has a great post of the Kmart sale and some coupon matchup ideas.  Below is the matchups from her site:

Free Deodorant at Target

Coupons.com just listed a new coupon for $1 off Dove Men+Care deodorant with no size restriction.  And I think Target has this for $.99 in their travel section which would mean free deodorant.  You need to use zip code 43065 to find the coupon which is under Personal Care.

My Coupon Class Tonight

Thank you to everyone who came to the coupon class.  We raised over $200 for CARE (Community Autism Resources of Evansville) and had a great time.  I had some great couponers pass on some of their tricks and tips for couponing and I wanted to pass them on to everyone else.

1. The "GhettoMart" (I love that I learned that Evansville has a ghetto mart) which is Walmart on Covert Ave. has been price matching not only the sale price on the Walgreens and CVS ad but also the Register Reward or the Extra Care Buck.  For example if the ad stated that Gillette razors are on sale for $8 but will be $4 after the Register Reward then Walmart will price match it at the $4.  I haven't been there to try this myself but I can't wait too.  Per Walmarts store policy you also do not need to take the store ad in with you because every cashier should have it themselves.

2.  Thortons gas station on S. Green River sells Louisville Sunday newspapers for $2.  A Louisville newspaper will give you better coupons than an Evansville one so this is a great resource. I always suggest people check to make sure the coupon inserts are in the paper before they buy it.

3.  If you ever find that you forgot to use a coupon when you were checking out, just go to the Customer Service desk at Target and they will give you the cash for the missed coupon.  I've done this more than once and have never had any problems.

4.  Dollar Tree sells Sunday newspapers for $1 which I knew but I did not know that you can buy them on Saturday.  The store usually already has the coupon section of the paper and will sell that to you on Saturday for $1.

5.  Several people have been able to shop at CVS and Walgreens locally on Sat. night and get the next weeks deals.  I know most stores computer systems allow that after midnight but several people were able to shop before then.

One on my secret couponing dreams

I find myself thinking at times how much I would love to convince the Duggar family to start couponing.  I think it's a daydream of mine.  The Duggar family has a show on TLC, 19 Kids and Counting, and they are such an inspiration to me in many ways.  But I think they could use some couponing in their lives and would be a great teaching tool for their children.  Think about how much help Michelle would have with cutting coupons and keeping them organized.  She can teach math skills and life lessons through coupons. They could split up transaction by 19, think of the stockpile that would create.  They could build an addition onto their enormous house just for a stockpiled pantry.  Maybe some day they will invite me over and say "Hey, Mary, can you show me about that couponing thing."

This officially makes me a giant dork but I don't care.

I also daydream about winning a 5 minute shopping spree in a grocery store like in an old Laverne and Shirley episode I once saw.  I would hit the meat department first, then baking good, then medicines and nutrition drinks.

Free Crest Sample Pack

If you take a survey you may qualify to receive a free sample pack of Crest products.  I qualified myself so I'm excited to see what shows up in my mailbox.  GO HERE to see if you qualify. Some of these in the past have been full of stuff so you may get more than you think.

Another way to get coupons...

People always ask me "where do you get all your coupons" and I have a lot of answers for that.  One is to write companies and tell them you love their products and they often mail you back coupons.  GO HERE for a list of companies you can write to.  Most couponers will write 5 to 15 companies a week.  I have just started doing this myself and I'm waiting for the coupons to start showing up in my mailbox.

New Target Coupons

I'm SOOOO excited.  Target put up new coupons and they are good ones.  More clothing coupons (look for clearance), more Up & Up brand coupons and much more.  GO HERE to check them out.
